may 18, 1896 - Plessy vs. Ferguson
Description:
At this time, nearly all public facilities were segregated by race. Plessy, a mixed-race man, sat in the whites-only car and was arrested. The case went to the Supreme Court, which ruled that separate but equal facilities were legal. This case goes down in history as a terrible decision, as it was a step backwards for African Americans because ‘separate but equal’ facilities were never actually equal.
