Description:

Shenandoah, which took place in Virginia, was a victory for the South and a setback for Union forces. Confederate armies moved North through the valley and launched a series of attacks on Union forces. In five battles they were able pin down a lot of Union forces, providing a threat to Washington D.C. and keeping Union troops away from Richmond. This battle had an impact on the war because it was an obstacle for the Northern forces. The South had become dangerously close to Washington D.C. in this battle, drawing Northern troops back from their move towards Richmond. However, the South would soon lose an important battle on Union soil at Antietam.
