The book was widely regarded as a counter-cultural masterpiece, but a long-awaited screen adaptation of Martin Amis novel London Fields has been mercilessly trounced by critics.

The new film was released across the United States in October following a troubled production, fraught relations and a series of lawsuits and counter-suits fired between director Matthew Cullen, actress Amber Heard and the producers, who have been accused of making unauthorised changes to the final cut.

But critics have not warmed to Cullen’s adaptation of an otherwise well-received and much loved novel, with universally bad reviews reflected in dwindling ticket sales.
