aug 8, 1846 - Wilmot Proviso
Description:
The Mexican War was strongly supported in Mississippi, but abolitionists said the war was designed to increase the power of slave states. The land acquired was below the 36º30' parallel, and would "eventually become slave states". The Wilmot Proviso was a bill that prevented slavery in the lands acquired from Mexico. Mississippi was strongly against this bill. This bill was not passed.
