feb 3, 1870 - 15th Amendment Ratified

Description:

This amendment was initially proposed in the late 1860’s and voted on in 1869. This amendment gave African American males the right to vote, in fact it gave all men the right to vote, not dependent on their race or previous servitude. While this may not seem to directly have a big impact on the suffrage of women, it was a big issue for them. Some suffragists liked this amendment, as they supported equality for all people and this was moving forward on that, while others realized that there were still major problems socially in the United States, as they were still only giving men the right to vote. This lead to a little bit of a split in the suffrage movement, those who supported this amendment and those who didn’t. It even contributed to the creation of the American Woman’s Suffrage Association.
