jan 16, 1919 - Eighteenth Amendment

Description:

The 18th Amendment banned the manufacture, sale, transportation, import, or export of all “intoxicating liquors in the U.S. “Intoxicated liquors” were anything over .5% alcohol. The temperance movement which really started the drive for the amendment became more prominent after the Civil War. During World War I the demand for the prohibition of alcohol was so high that Congress eventually proposed and ratified the 18th amendment stating what is known as the Prohibition one year later when the amendment went into effect. The propaganda for this amendment was very extreme.
