The bladelord psiocracy of Jhaamdath is disposed in a bloody coup, and is replaced by the militant Emperor Dharien. The emperor orders the construction of a great navy on the Sea of Fallen Stars.

Members of the church of Auppenser protest events in Jhaamdath. Hundreds of dissenters are arrested and imprisoned. Several are accused of treason and executed. The majority are subjected to mind-altering psionics that instil loyalty to the emperor. The crackdown mutes the church's protests, and many of the faithful go into hiding.
