apr 14, 1865 - Lincoln Assassinated

Description:

Only five days after the end of the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated. He and his wife had gone to see a play in Ford’s Theater in Washington when during the third act, John Wilkes Booth came up behind him and shot him in the back of the head, marking the first time that a president had been assassinated. John Wilkes Booth was a 26 year old Southern sympathizer who was killed 12 days later by Union calvary. Nearly 7 million Americans came to his funeral march to mourn his death, about ⅓ of the US population at the time. Now that the Civil War was over and slavery was technically abolished, the nation faced a whole new set of problems such as reunifying the nation and ensuring the freedom of African Americans and they had no leader to do so.
