Fort Sumter is famous for being the first battle of the Civil War. As soon as the Confederacy had been formed, many Confederate soldiers had been working to seize federal forts, and Fort Sumter was one of the most important. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the fort was occupied by Major Robert Anderson. The gunfire started on April 12, 1861 and lasted a little over a day before Anderson and his troops surrendered, marking the beginning of the Civil War.
