apr 30, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase
Description:
After Spain had controlled the Louisiana territory for a number of years, the leader of France at the time, Napoleon Bonaparte persuaded them to give control of the area back to France in the hopes that France could expand this territory and have land in the Americas. But, after a few years of this idea, Napoleon gave up and decided to offer to sell the land to the US. Jefferson took this offer and bought the land for $15 million dollars, more than doubling the size of the US. In 1804, Jefferson along with Meriwether Lewis and William Clark got together a group to go explore the new area.
