Over the past 50 years treaties have increased the role of the parliament and it's power to be a co-decider in legislative decisions and reformed the voting system to qualified majority voting to democratically strengthen Europe.

In Parliament there are so called Members of the European Parliament (MEP's) who are elected via direct universal suffrage for a five-year period. There are currently 705 MEP's - the limit is 751

Seats in Parliament are allocated depending on the population of the country with Germany having the most seats (96) and Cyprus/Malta the least (6)

MEP's meet in the Parliament 12 times a year in Strasbourg for plenary sittings and in Brussels additional plenary sittings. In these plenary sittings they discuss the current situation of the EU and it's member sates as well as possible policy and regulation changes.
