This was a purchase from France that covered 828,000 square miles of land from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. This was a fair trade where America paid France $15 million USD. The purchase was made for the Americans to have control over the harbour in New Orleans and France needed the money to pay back for war with Britain.
