Description:
The Virginia Slave Codes were a series of codes regarding the topic of slavery. Any non Christian servant who came into the United States was considered a slave. Masters were allowed to beat slaves and would be excused if they killed a slave during punishment. Slaves were forbidden to assault or hurt a white person. Slaves were not allowed to have arms or move abroad without a master’s written permission. Overall, the slave codes strictly limited the slaves’ already limited freedom. Although the times were bleak, the future led to the first state abolishing slavery in America.
