At this time Asian Americans were experiencing discrimination and language barriers in their learning. In Lau v. Nichols, the federal court ruled that the rights of Chinese American students had been violated by the San Francisco school system. Students who could not comprehend their schooling were to thereafter be taught in their native language, a concept that is related to modern bilingual programs.
