jan 1, 1923 - Hyperinflation in Germany

Description:

Reasons for Hitler's rise to power (Favourable Circumstances)

Post-war Germany struggled with poverty, high unemployment and a fragile economy. The government kept up reparation payments by printing more money. The more money printed, the more its value decreased. Prices spiralled out of control and hyperinflation resulted. In 1919, 6600 marks was a small fortune. By 1923, the same amount of money was not enough for a postage stamp. The poor were hit hard and the savings and pensions of the wealthier and middle-class Germans were wiped out virtually overnight.
