jul 3, 1863 - Battle of Gettysburg

Description:

Gettysburg is well-agreed to be the tide-shifting battle in the Civil War. On the third day of fighting, Lee's final invasion attempt failed. Though they had the chance to finish off the Confederate army, the North didn't attack back. General Grant recognized this as one of his biggest mistakes of his career. Regardless, General Lee wanted to resign after this battle, though he was talked out of it. It was also the bloodiest battle (and even day) of the war, with more than 50,000 combined deaths and countless more injured. Gettysburg is often lumped in with Vicksburg, which occurred the next day.
