A victory at Antietam, Maryland was just what the Union needed. Confederate General Lee's plan as discovered, giving Union reinforcements time to gather and push them out of Maryland. Though some historians argue that Antietam was a stalemate, it put the Union in a very good position, allowing Lincoln to release the Emancipation Proclamation and secure his reelection.
