jul 21, 1861 - Battle at Bull Run
Description:
The First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861 was the first real battle of the Civil War. With a combined death toll of ~4,750, the Confederacy won, calling for reinforcements and pushing back at the Union troops. Before this, the Union had hopes for a swift victory, but Bull Run did the opposite: it gave the Confederacy hope and forced the Union to think about a long, hard war. Military technology also began to improve, both sides knowing they'd need superior weapons to win a fast war.
