jun 28, 1914 - World War I Begins
Description:
The stage was set perfectly for World War I in 1914. There are five main causes that historians point to: Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Assassination. European countries were in an arms race, stockpiling weapons and navies. The intricate, complex web of secret alliances made it so that stepping on the toes of one country would have a catastrophic domino effect. Growing sense of nationalism in European countries, in part due to fights over imperialism, fueled tensions between countries. All of this came to a head when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28, 1914 and a chain reaction was set off.
