dec 6, 1865 - Thirteenth Amendment Ratified
Description:
Eight months after the end of the Civil War at Appomattox, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified. The Emancipation Proclamation, while important symbolically, held little standing after the war because it left some Union states with slavery. Many southern states wished for state sovereignty on the issue, but a Republican Presidency in 1864 ensured the Constitutional Amendment. Though it was proposed during drafts, the protection against discrimination wasn't included in the final text of the amendment.
