may 10, 1773 - Tea Act Passed
Description:
The Tea Act was passed to simply provide financial relief to the East India Trading Company. The East India Trading Company had a massive surplus of tea that was not being bought due to its price. The cost of British tea was so high that it caused all kinds of British subjects to drink smuggled Dutch tea. This act made British tea cheaper. The colonists, however, saw this as an attempt to persuade Americans to buy British tea so that they would give up their stand against the tea tax. American colonists saw this as yet another attempt to undermine a value of colonial life. This is the same act that lead to the Boston Tea Party, where 342 chests of tea was dumped into the Boston harbor in protest of the Tea Act. This was a simple showcase of American discontent with the British. This act lead to the American Revolution because the colonists felt like the Crown was trying to undermine their values by bribing them. To the colonists, Great Britain thinking that they could be bribed with anything was a slap in the face. Not only were they hurt in their emotions and finances, but now their pride was hurt. These injuries fueled their fight against the Empire.
