mar 22, 1765 - Stamp Act Passed

Description:

Also passed by George Grenville, this tax was passed to pay for part of the cost of keeping British troops in America. This act required a tax stamp on all printed items. It was after this act took effect that the American colonists strove for representation in British Parliament. This request was denied, making the American colonists feel unimportant, unequal, and unheard. These three emotions were driving factors of colonial hatred towards Great Britain. The colonists, at this point, had always felt like they were true Englishmen. Being rejected in Parliament felt like a betrayal, as years of Salutary Neglect lead them to believe that Britain cared about them and considered them as equals. This betrayal lead colonists to eventually betray Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War.
