12 h, nov 15, 2017 y - GQ Australia Amber Heard Woman of the Year AWARDS Drunk Interview

Description:

FROM GQ Australia:

Amber Heard has been announced as the 2017 Woman of the Year at the GQ Men of the Year awards, in association with Bulgari.

Brave and beautiful, Amber Heard has been a fearless advocate of women's rights, helping to redefine feminism in a modern age. 2017 has been the busiest of Heard's career, with Justice League and Aquaman. For the latter, Heard spent seven months shooting in Australia where, despite being unceremoniously booted out of the country two years earlier by Barnaby Joyce, she fell in love with the country.

Having starred in comedies, dramas and rom-coms, Justice League presented Heard with a new opportunity - that of her superhero debut. But despite all this and the end of her relationship with Johnny Depp, Heard has continued to campaign for justice and fairness, encouraging others to come forward and criticise the status quo by being shamelessly honest about her own issues.

An advocate for women's equality, Heard has cemented herself as a role model to young men and women and not surprisingly, is our GQ Woman of the Year.

Accepting her award in Sydney - which Heard joked was “on behalf of my dogs?” - the actress spoke out about her sexuality, and how the marriage equality vote has impacted her personally.

“I feel really honoured to be in this room tonight with examples of real gentlemen, it's a rare thig these days, and I feel honoured.

“I also think the timing is amazing today: I flew in from Los Angeles after being here for eight months shooting, I thought I had finally escaped...but no. Two days later I flew back to accept this award...I'm assuming on behalf of my dogs Pistal and Boo. Well ufortunately they could not make it tonight.

“I was on the plane [to Sydney on Wednesday morning] and we were landing and the pilot came on the speaker and said, "Welcome to Sydney... and by the way, we just got news that the vote came in… and the majority of Australians support the right for all Australians to marry the person they love." And I thought this is a commercial airline, and the pilot is announcing this news, and wow that's brave. And then something unbelievable happened: the whole plane erupted in this chorus of applause.”

"Every single person on the plane clapped,” she added.

Remembering a time when being opening gay or lesbian wasn’t ok, Heard recalls a time she was warned about being involved with another woman - and how it still impacts her to this day.

“I remember ten years ago when I refused to drop my girlfriend’s hand at the time, everyone told me that was a death sentence in Hollywood. Ten years late the whole plane is clapping at this offhanded news announcement that the pilot decided to make, and it brought chills to my body and a tear to my eye - and here I am.”

“So I feel really lucky to be here today, and I feel really honoured and humbled. And I appreciate it very much.”

Woman of the year? We couldn’t have picked a better one ourselves.
