Description:

A violent suppression of the Communist party, the April 12 incident, or also named as the Shanghai Massacre was organized by the military forces of Chiang Kai-shek, and the Kuomintang party. This incident also led to a spilt between the left and right wing in the Kuomintang party, as Chiang Kai-shek named himself leader in Nanjing, and the original left wing of the party lead by Wang Jingwei in Wuhan. Thousands of Communists were injured or killed, creating a high contrast to the small amount of Kuomintang which were hurt. This massacre made Chinese citizens very afraid of their security, which resulted in thousands of Communists fleeing the cities attacked. The Kuomintang gained power, especially the forces lead by Chiang Kai-shek, as a effect, he became the leader of various major cities, including Shanghai. This was the first event which signaled the conflict between KMT and CCP of being against each other. For the KMT, Chiang Kai-shek was the leader, on the other side, out of the few survivors, Mao gained authority by raising bold statements of standing on the opposition side of the KMT, resulting in him being the first leader of People’s Republic of China. The Chinese civil war was an almost immediate effect of this Massacre, transforming China into a Communist nation.
