In March 2003, the FBI issued seeking information alerts for Dr. Aafia and her ex-husband, Mohammed Amjad Khan.

Several news articles were initially released that Dr. Aafia was in police custody, these reports were later denied. In May 2004, a major Pakistani newspaper, DAWN, published an article that "Dr Aafia was handed over to US last year" citing official government sources.
