3h 25min, jan 1, 1481 y - Christ Delivering the Keys of the Kingdom to Saint Peter, Perugino, 1481-1483

Description:

1. Pope Sixtus IV commissioned Perugino along with other painters to decorate the walls of the Sistine Chapel, resulting in Perugino painting Christ Delivering the Keys of the Kingdom to Saint Peter. Being commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV, Perugino must have chosen to paint this scene as a reminder of the Pope's authority over the Catholic church since the papacy had used this biblical event in the Book of Matthew to support its claim of having total authority over the Church.
2. Interest in Classical art during the Rennaissance period shows in this painting. The figures have contrapposto which was common in Greek sculpture. The architecture in the background is based on the Florence Baptistery, and on either side are representations of the Arch of Constantine which commemorates Constantine the Great who legalized Christianity in Rome and was the first Christian Roman emperor.
3. The perspectival system in art was developing due to an interest in representing the natural world or reality. Perugino experiments with this in his work.
