This case is important because it brought fourth the first amendment. Gitlow was one of the writers for the "Left Wing Manifesto" newspaper a Communist Journal. New York police arrested Gitlow because he allegedly promoted Criminal Anarchy, breaking the First Amendment. The Supreme Court ruled that freedom of speech can only appear in Supreme Courts and not in State or County.
