Harriet Tubman was born a slave. She was born in Maryland, and is best known for being a conductor on the Underground Railroad and an abolitionist for slavery. Harriet was a slave herself but later escaped on foot with help from a white woman. During her lifetime, she helped over 300 slaves to freedom and made 19 trips on the Underground Railroad.
