nov 10, 1973 - First Lambda Legal Meeting
Description:
Lambda Legal, the first legal organization established to fight for the equal rights of homosexuals, has its first meeting.
Lambda's founder William J. Thom, submitted incorporation papers for approval to the New York Courts in 1971, but his application was denied on the grounds that its proposed activities would be contrary to public policy. Lambda also becomes their own first client after being denied non-profit status, which is eventually awarded to them by the Supreme Court. The formation of this group expanded civil rights because members of the LGBT community finally had legal representation in cases of discrimination.
