jan 1, 878 - The Treaty of Wedmore is signed
Description:
In the year 878 AD, the Vikings attacked Wessex but this time were defeated by King Alfred and his army. Both sides agreed that a peace needed to be reached so Alfred offered the Vikings the northeast of England on the conditions that they would leave the rest of England to the Anglo-Saxons and that Guthrum, King of the Vikings at the time, had to convert to Christianity. This agreement is now known as the Treaty of Wedmore which officially granted the Vikings the Danelaw and left the rest of the country to King Alfred.
