Description:

The Anglo-Saxon chronicle, a collection of records kept by the Anglo-Saxons, lists 787 CE as the year of the first Viking attack on England. Sometime that year, three ships manned by Danish Vikings came ashore in the south of the country. At the time, a royal official who assumed that they were merchants intended to escort them to the king's town to pay the required taxes. However, he was killed instead.
