Johnny Depp sings David Bowie song Heroes in new video from Hollywood Vampires' upcoming album Rise
By KEVIN KAYHART
The rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires, whose core members include - Alice Cooper, Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Johnny Depp - are set to release their second studio album, Rise, June 21.
For their latest single from the record, Depp takes over the lead vocal duties for a cover of David Bowie's classic song Heroes.
The black and white video was filmed in Berlin's Hansa Studios last June, the very same studio that Bowie recorded the original version way back in 1977.
Building a sense of drama to the opening feedback riff of the iconic song, the video begins some behind-the-scene shots of the band getting ready to record as singer Alice Cooper walks into the belly of the room.
Depp makes his first appearance when he belts out the opening lines: 'I, I wish I could swim. Like dolphins, like dolphins can swim.'
With his mohawk pulled back with a feather and dark sunglasses, the legendary actor looks every bit the classic rocker as he belts out the attitude and emotion with authority with his guitar hanging over his shoulders.
By the time the tune kicks into the chorus: 'And we can be heroes,' the video begins to cut to shots of the band on a tour-bus and live performance footage.
By the second verse the attention is centered on Depp both on stage and in the recording studio.
At one point the band pays homage to Bowie with a quick shot of a picture of the rock and roll legend.
Although the band started out primarily doing cover songs of their favorite artists from the 1970s for first self-titled album in 2015, Rise branches out with many more originals.
The previous two new songs released from the new album include The Boogieman Surprise last month and Who's Laughing Now in April.
'[It’s] not only a totally different animal than the first Vampires album, it is unique to anything I’ve ever been a part of,' Cooper said in an interview with NME.
'I think that with this album, we are establishing what the Vampires’ sound really is, whereas with the first album we were more tipping our hats to our fallen rock n roll brothers.'
Depp co-founded the band with Perry and Cooper as a way to pay homage to the iconic rock artists who passed away in the 1970s.
