jan 1, 1358 - Awakening of Set

Description:

In 1358 DR, Pil'it'ith and his followers secretly approached the minions of the Mulhorandi deity Set and offered to help Set in binding their god Sseth, who had gone silent, into eternal slumber, in exchange for divine aid in their battle against the khaastas. Set accepted their proposal and created the first wereserpents to mark the agreement. He also convinced Sebek to send a host of werecrocodiles to serve in the Okothians' army.

This alliance caused a major religious upheaval among the other sarrukh of Toril. Those sarrukh and yuan-ti of other regions, especially Chult, opposed the Okothians and began to search for a way to awaken Sseth. During the Spellplague, large numbers of serpentfolk attacked Okoth and killed Pil'it'ith and his followers in a secret war. Sseth reawakened soon after and eighteen of the remaining sarrukh in Toril became the new masters of Okoth. As of 1479 DR, Okoth secretly had spread its influence across many lands of Faerûn.

Elminster himself once noted that Baylox, Master Mage of Shussel was the realms foremost expert on the ancient magic of Okoth.

The Okothian sarrukh soon realized that Sseth had sunk into a sort of hibernation and was barely answering their prayers. During the Time of Troubles, Sseth stopped answering prayers altogether. Faced with the threat of the khaastas, the Okothian clerics turned to Set, the god of evil in the Mulhorandi pantheon. In their bargain, Set agreed to answer their prayers if they helped him in binding Sseth to eternal slumber. Thus, at the end of the Time of Troubles, Set absorbed Sseth's portfolio. About eleven years after the Avatar Crisis, Set began answering the prayers of his new worshipers. This included the yuan-ti, who still believed their prayers were being answered by Sseth.

The betrayal of Sseth had caused some undesirable consequences for the Okothians. Sseth was then beset by nightmares and thrashes against his bonds, awakening the hibernating serpentfolk elsewhere in Faerûn. The sarrukh of Mhairshaulk emerged from their hibernation. They sought to liberate Sseth and oppose the sarrukh of Okoth. The Mhairshaulk sarrukh worked to re-awaken the ancient yuan-ti empire of Serpentes, which was loyal to them.

Pil'it'ith, the legendary albino sarrukh leader, was leading the Cult of Set in Okoth. Under him, the cult grew in strength. The cult's members were primarily Scaled Ones, but others had also joined its ranks. The khaastas had recently been appearing in the region of the Lakes of Salt, resulting in battles between them and the cult.

There a crisis arose in 1358 DR when the Time of Troubles started and Sseth (the reborn Merrshaulk) stopped answering sarrukh's prayers. So Pil'it'ith decided to replace Sseth with the Mulhorandi pantheon god Set. Set agreed to become the new god of the sarrukh
