may 28, 1830 - Indian Removal Act
Description:
This law gave president Andrew Jackson the permission to grant land west of the Mississippi River in exchange for Indian lands within the existing borders. Among others, the Cherokee people were forcibly removed during the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839. At least 4,000 Native Americans died on the journey due to the harsh conditions in which they traveled. This became known as the Trail of Tears.
