HAINAN ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL MASTER CLASS

THE GOTHIC PRINCE, JOHNNY DEPP

Fans who know Depp well, knows that most of his characters are not "normal". And "crazy" and "madness" aren't enough to describe.
So when he attended the Master Class event hosted by film media, with no hush, he traced his more than 30 years of acting experience, making you have a feeling of illusion: This man in front of me is really Johnny Depp? Like his constellation Gemini, Depp also has two personalities: looks haughty on the movie screens, migrating between light and darkness, and a calm attitude off screen, laughing giddily about his past.

ACCIDENTALLY, BECAME AN ACTOR
How did you start your career as an actor?

Johnny Depp: The word "actor career" is quite strange. I started acting by accident, and maybe it was also a fate. When I first moved to Holly-wood, I was a guitarist for a band. After the band disbanded, I lost my job and sent my resume everywhere; I even tried in video stores and bookstores. I had a friend who was actor, who thought I would become a good actor and advised me to meet his manager. So I made my first movie, although I wasn't quite sure about what I was doing. Little by little, I stepped on another course of my life, and I had to give up my long-time music dreams to devote myself to the film industry. I started to read all kinds of professional books and sign up for performance classes to get a deeper understanding of the operation of the entire film industry. Later I discovered that the most important thing to understand is the practice.

How did you feel when you faced a camera for the first time?

Johnny Depp: I remember being so stupid at that time (laughs). That was the first time I knew how a film was shot and how the scenes were put together into a movie. To be honest, I used to feel that acting was quite boring, because there is a detailed process to make a movie; different camera angles, close-ups, all of which have to be very distinct.

When you get a script, how long does it take to understand, assimilate the character, and find his inner breakout point? What is the situation?

Johnny Depp: I feel very natural. After I get the script, my brain will direct me to how to interpret. First of all, I'll be looking for something interesting in the script and see if the whole story has a layering. I will first decide if this is a good role and see if it has a good script. If I'm not satisfied with it, of course I can't convince me to play. If I want to play, but can't give this character extra points, I would start to think about my limitations and find new ways to show him. Sometimes I come across a character that I've never played and I want to try it, so I usually read the first ten pages of the script. Sometimes, in five pages I know if the script is suitable for me or not.

When you're preparing for a new play, do you put yourself in the role?

Johnny Depp: I do put myself in roles and stories, flashing some images and youthful memories in my mind, or fragments of my life, which would make me feel more comfortable. When I read a script for the first time, I make some remarks and small notes, and write down my instinctive thoughts. After a second reading, I try to think outside of myself and find the wrong ideas. If the first and second times were the same, I would read it again, find the characteristics of the character, and merge myself into him. And after reading the full section, I will have an approximate understanding. But my habit is not to read too much performance or script instructions. I'd rather sort out my own emotions on the scene, showing naturally, instead of looking for inflexible instructions and then doing the action, thus I can be fully integrated into the script.
