RAMA, Ont. - Acting chameleon Johnny Depp is back at it.
This time the Pirates of the Caribbean star, currently going through a messy divorce from Amber Heard, has temporarily given up his day job and is rocking out on stage with the likes of Alice Cooper and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.
The trio formed the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires last year and brought their act to Casino Rama, about two hours north of Toronto, on Friday night for the only Canadian date of their North American tour after playing across the pond in Europe .
Depp has shaved both sides of his head, let the top grow out, gone heavy on the black eyeliner and let his inner rock star take over.
The 53-year-old actor is playing guitar along with Cooper bandmate Tommy Henriksen while the band - named after Cooper’s ‘70s musicians drinking club The Hollywood Vampires - is rounded out by Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo, Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver mighty drummer Matt Sorum, and keyboardist and longtime Depp pal Bruce Witkin.
“We’re the Hollywood Vampires paying tribute to our dead friends - this is one of them,” said Cooper, in his shock rocker eye makeup, black leather pants (and gloves) and welding a black cane before David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel and Suffragette City, the third and fourth songs of the night.
The Vampires released a debut album last year that’s heavy on classic rock covers plus three originals co-written by Depp, so their 95-minute set list also reflected that.
“This next song is dedicated to Johnny’s stepfather,” said Cooper of the original As Bad As I Am.
“He was a criminal,” added Depp.
“He would come home for Christmas and toast, ‘Johnny, as good as you are, as bad as I am,’” said Cooper.
Depp, who wandered the stage all night, often waving to fans who waved back, got to handle the solo on this song but Perry, decked out in head to toe black leather, did a lot of the heavy lifting on such standouts as Rebel Rebel, Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Manic Depression, T. Rex’s Bang a Gong, The Beatles’ Come Together, Love’s 7 and 7 Is, Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love (with Witkin on lead vocals and Cooper on harmonica), Motorhead’s Ace Of Spades, The Who’s My Generation (during which he destroyed his guitar at the very end), Cooper’s I’m Eighteen and Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion.
There was an element of the sold-out crowd, on their feet from the get go, being starstruck at the mere presence of a movie star in their midst, but eventually they seemed to get used to the cigarello-smoking Depp being up there.
“I hope you’re having a good time,” said Depp, who got to flex his solo muscles again, along with Henriksen, on the blues numbers, Stop Messin’ Around with Perry taking over lead vocals, and on Cooper’s show ending School’s Out complete with balloons on stage.
In a sign of the times, concertgoers had to go through metal detectors to enter Rama’s Entertainment Centre - only the second time the venue has had to use them, meaning a slight delay of 20 minutes in the concert starting. (The first time was for Canadian comic Howie Mandel.)
There was also two pre-concert meet-and-greets backstage with the band members, one of whom - Cooper - was relaxing earlier in the day by going for a round of golf at Hawkridge.
One meet-and-greet was the usual organized for Rama players and the other was part of a $1,500 package to see the show.
