jan 1, 802 - Foundation of The Khmer Empire
Description:
In 802 CE, the powerful Khmer Empire, sometimes known as one of the world's best kingdoms, was founded in South East Asia. At its peak, the Empire covered today's Cambodia, Southern Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. However, for most of the time, it covered modern days' Cambodia.
The empire was a builder society, mostly known for its impressive and complicated structures. They established temples, landscapes and monuments that are used for tourism today. It was very successful, as it was protected from invaders with rivers and rainforests. The river also meant that they had good access to water and fertile land. Also contributing to their success, the Khmer Empire had a well functioning 'god-king' government. The kings ruled with an iron fist and had private and useful information about how to run the empire favourably. Due to these factors in their favour, the empire endured over 600 years.
The most influential and followed religions in the Khmer Empire were Buddhism and Hinduism. In fact, Buddhism was actually the downfall of the empire. Because of this religion, kings were no longer seen as god-like, meaning the foundation of the government came crashing down. Productivity and economy suffered, leading to a poor amount of food and a weak empire. It was around this time when rival empires attacked, causing the collapse of the Empire.
