jan 1, 793 - Beginning of Viking Raids
Description:
The first recorded Viking raid was around 793 CE when a church in Lindisfarne was raided. After this, raids occurred regularly on the coast of England, the Vikings capturing, enslaving and slaughtering people as well as collecting goods. They most often targeted monasteries because of the many treasures and the lack of protection. The treasures looted were used to trade between Vikings, and as trophies of successful raids. As they began to seize increasing amounts of land, they settled in camps in the north and east of England. The raids did not stop for centuries, it continued on for 300 years through multiple Viking bands along the coasts of Britain. At times, places in England were ruled by Viking Kings, the most well known, King Cnut. The final invasion of Vikings was in 1066 when Harold Godwinson marched with his army and defeated Harandra in a gruesome battle.
