jan 1, 1980 - Superfund Act Passed

Description:

In the 1960s and 70s, there was a significant rise in companies producing microchips and integrated circuits. Chip producers wanted their facilities to have the aesthetic of a college campus instead of heavy industry, so they mostly buried their chemical tanks. When these underground tanks, cancer causing chemicals leached into groundwater. These ecological disasters helped to spur the creation of the EPA's superfund program and forced chip manufacturers to design factories for chemical spills and public and employee safety. Santa Clara is still the home of more superfund sites than any other place in the country.
