Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated in April. Lincoln was attending the play Our American Cousin at Ford’s theatre when a well-known stage actor named John Booth shot him. After Booth pulled the trigger, he jumped off the stage and fled out the backdoor and was on the run for 12 days before finally getting tracked down. The assassination of Lincoln put the nation in a difficult place as they were just trying to start the reconstruction process after the Civil War.
