In his letters to ר׳ יעקב בן ניסים of Kairouan, ר׳ שרירא גאון addresses the questions of his colleague about the evolution of Talmudic literature and Jewish communities. In between the lines of ר׳ שרירא’s explanation of the history of the Talmud and its applications, historians understand the economic, political, and religious context of the time, all of which indicate the greater decline in the Geonic influence because of its work for the Jews of the Diaspora.

About the Author: ר׳ שרירא גאון lived from around 906 to around 1006. He was the head of ישיבת פומבדיתא and in this role he addressed many Halachic questions from communities in the Diaspora. He is most known for his letter to ר׳ יעקב בן ניסים of Kairouan, or his אגרת.
