The first author of the Jewish system of ethics, רבינו בחיי felt that too many Jews were too focused on the external practices of Judaism and not enough on internal values. He focused on the rational approach to dedicate our desires spiritually to serving G-d with joy. Divided into 10 שערים - such as שער הבטחון, שער התשובה, and שער אהבת ה׳, his works are still learned today to inspire personal growth.

About the Author: רבינו בחיי אבן פקודה, or just רבינו בחיי, lived from 1080 to 1120. Not much is known about his personal life, but he was a דיין and cared deeply about the ethical aspects of Judaism such that it inspired him to write חובות הלבבות.
