FROM ULTIMA HORA:
Actor Johnny Depp, awarded at the Palma Italian-Spanish Film Festival
The Palma Italian-Spanish Film Festival continues its journey these days at the CaixaForum and does so with one of the highlights of its programming, the presentation of the film Waiting for the Barbarians, starring Johnny Depp, Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson. The producer of the film, Andrea Iervolino, was present at an event that had the telematic connection of the film's director, Ciro Guerra.
Iervolino, together with the director of the festival, Gabriella Carlucci, explained that both Depp and Rylance, invited by the festival to go to Palma, have seen it impossible for their attendance at the event due to the quarantines they should carry out on their return.
Johnny Depp, in particular, wanted to send a letter in which he regretted his absence and explained that it was due to "spending the quarantine in London to shoot the third installment of Fantastic Beasts" and showed his gratitude to "the beautiful city of Palma that I hope to be able to visit in the near future."
Oscars
Although Depp and Rylance could not attend, the public could enjoy Waiting for the Barbarians, which as Carlucci explained, "starts his career for the Oscars in Palma." For his part, Iervolino wanted to highlight that "Mallorca is a perfect filming set and I hope I can come to make a production in the future."
About the film he presented this Wednesday, the Italian producer explained the parallels he sees between history and reality through "an invisible nemesis" that generates "fear" in the population. In his opinion, this "fear" forces people to make decisions that are not "free" because this feeling is the most capable of "guiding people" and providing opportunities for some people to "try to control our will". Iervolino also wanted to highlight the "timeless" quality of the story of the book that they have now turned into a film.
The producer also received on behalf of Johnny Depp the Excellence of the Year award that rewards the entire career and, especially, the performance carried out in Waiting for the Barbarians.
The Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra, who has directed the film, could not be physically present either, but he did make an online entry in which he expressed feeling very satisfied for "having been able to work on such an important production as this and with such a good team." In addition, he wanted to emphasize the weight of "the poetic words written by Coetzee 40 years ago that continue to resonate today."
