jan 1, 1300 - רא׳׳ש

Description:

~1280 - 1330 - ראשונים

While he had no organized Halachic ספר like other rabbis, the רא׳׳ש’s overall contribution to the commentary on the גמרא made him a significant figure in the Halachic realm. He was most known for omitting the deliberation and just the פסק seen in his commentaries and letters to his community in Germany. His work was so significant that it became one of the 3 “pillars” that the בית יוסף used in the שולחן ערוך.

About the Author: רבינו אשר בנ יחיאל, also known as the רא׳׳ש, lived from 1259 – 1327. While he was born in Germany, he fled to Spain because of religious persecution of the Jewish community and specifically the abduction of his teacher, ר׳ מאיר מרוטנברג. Still, he wrote various responsas to his community in Germany to answer their questions. Through the recommendation of the רשב׳׳א, he became the rabbi of Toledo, Spain, and led the community until his death.
