This work is the first classic example of what modern Halachic works look like today because of its codification by the subject that was applicable at the time, leaving out the laws that applied when living in Israel by mainly summarizing the sources from the תלמוד. It became a sort of template for later Halachic works, namely הלכות גדולות.

About the Author: Originally a member of the ישיבת סורא, the exilarch of the era appointed ר׳ יהודאי גאון as the head of פומפדיתא because there was no one as learned as him that was fit for the role. He served as the head of the ישיבה from 757 to 761.
