Born in 993, ר׳ שמואל הנגיד started life as a shopkeeper in Cordoba but had to flee his home due to war. He restarted his spiceshop in Malaga in 1013 and wrote letters for a scribe of the kalif’s court. Prior to the scribe’s death, the scribe admitted that ר׳ שמואל הנגיד was the author of the letters, and ר׳ שמואל הנגיד was admitted to the court as both the kalif’s personal doctor and eventually as the general of the army. Aside from being the most powerful Jew (or person) in Spain politically, ר׳ שמואל הנגיד was also a major תלמיד חכם and was well known for his poetry that he wrote about his various stages of life. ר׳ שמואל הנגיד died in 1056.
