18 h, jan 21, 2015 y - MORTDECAI Premier Johnny Depp HOLLYWOOD

Description:

FROM VARIETY:
Moustaches were very much front and center at Wednesday’s premiere of Lionsgate’s “Mortdecai” at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

Johnny Depp confessed on the red carpet that his facial hair was key to making the storyline work.

Director David Koepp was particularly fulsome in his praise, noting that most stars would not want to portray a cowardly character — even in a comedy. “I couldn’t stop laughing on the first takes,” he said.

Gwyneth Paltrow also gave the facial hair a thumbs up.

For writer Eric Aronson, the premiere marked the culmination of a dozen years of waiting. He began work on the script after discovering Kyril Bonfiglioli’s 1973 novel “Don’t Point That Thing at Me,” inspired by the writings of Dashiell Hammett and P.G. Wodehouse.

“I had to be really patient because there were lots and lots of no’s from every place in town before Johnny read it,” Aronson said.

At the after-screening bash at Chateau Marmont, exec producer Gigi Pritzker admitted that “Mortdecai” represented a far different tone than previous OddLot titles like “Ender’s Game” and director Jon Stewart’s “Rosewater.”

“I think we’re meeting the need for a silly comedy,” she declared.
