Description:

The Election of 1876, ultimately decided by a special election commission made up of 15 members from the Senate, House, and Supreme Court. Due to there being 7 Democrats and 8 Republicans in the commision, Rutherford B. Hayes was elected. However, the Democrats were angered by the results, and a series of secret deals were made between the Democrats and Republicans to destory the radical republican reconstruction plan. The compromise agreed upon was that Hayes would becme president and immediately remove federal troops from the Southm, ending Reconstruction. Hayes did as he promised, at the cost of the newly freed slaves who had no protections.
