Known for being a ruthless businessman, Rockefeller became the nations' richest man after successfully monopolizing the oil industry. The method he used to monopolize was called horizontal integration-- which is systematically buying out all competitors. After the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed in 1890, Rockefeller's company (Standard Oil Company) was immediately ion violation and was forced to split into 30 smaller companies. In his last years of life, perhaps inspired by fellow Gilded Age giant Andrew Carnegie, Rockefeller donated about $500 million to various universities, religious institutions, and scietific research.
