Date: January 29, 1919This amendment prohibited the sale and drinking of alcohol in the United States. When this amendment took effect in 1919, it was a huge failure. People found ways to drink and criminals sold alcohol illegally and made profit from those who bought it. The 21st Amendment ultimately repealed this amendment in 1933 and today, this period is known as Prohibition.
